When the ancient gentleman made a mistake, he would correct it immediately. In contrast, when the current gentleman makes a mistake, he leaves it uncorrected and even makes the best of it. The ancient gentleman’s mistake was like the solar eclipse or the lunar eclipse; the common people all see it very clearly. When he was correcting his mistake, all people raised their heads to see it. The current gentleman not only leaves his mistake uncorrected and makes the best of it, but also fabricates a set of false reasons to defend himself. ——Mencius
